| CHANGES
SET FOR LADY BAY
With Boots Athletic's
Lady Bay Ground now being mainly owned by Nottinghamshire
County Cricket Club, a number of wide reaching changes are
planned over the next few years as Notts aim to make the
ground (now known as The Nottinghamshire Sports Club) to
premier multi- sports facility in the county.
Notts plan to increase
the use of the ground by their young cricketers, with the
west side of the site ie where Boots Athletic's main two
pitches were situated, being used solely for cricket from
now on. No winter sports will be played on the west side and
all no sunday football will take place at the ground. Boots
Athletic's main pitch, which will be almost identical to the
existing one in dimensions, will be relocated onto the east
site of the site adjacent to the car park, and an additional
pitch will be created on the far side of the site near to
Nottingham Forest's training ground. Notts are investing
considerably resource in making these pitches of top quality.
The pitch which runs
parallel to the River Trent will continue to be used this
season by Crookes Healthcare FC, although this will be their
last season at the ground as, from 2006/07, Boots Athletic
will be the only football club to use the facilities. To
reflect the commitment Notts have shown to Boots Athletic,
it is envisaged that a change of name will take place from
this end of the season with exact details as yet unclear.
Additional plans
include another astroturf pitch, improvements to the social
facilities and changing areas as well as teaching/ classroom
facilities and a gym.
Boots Athletic General
Manager Dick Durrant is delighted with the changes; 'We are
extremely pleased that Notts have shown faith in us by
investing in our facilities. The offering to us is already
excellent and these changes will make things even better for
us. We are only too pleased to come into line with the image
Notts are creating by changing our name to reflect the
partnership we are forging with them as a demonstration of
our commitment to remaining at Notts Sports Club. The
rapport we have built up with Mark Tucker, who manages
the site, Doug Parker the Steward and Richard Johnson
the Groundsman is superb and we look forward to representing
Notts for many years to come. Good facilities are very very
difficult to come by these days and we are well pleased with
the offer that Mark has made to us. Less play on the pitches
can only lead to further improvements and with less sides
using the changing facilities then they will continue to be
treated with the respect they deserve rather than like parks
dressing rooms which was what was happening with some of the
visiting Sunday sides. All in all it's a magnificent result
for us and we can't wait for the developments to take shape.

NSL GOES ELECTRONIC
The UHLSPORT Notts
Senior League is to trial a system for submitting teamsheets
electronically via e mail. Traditionally, Club Secretaries
have filled out the forms manually and posted them in to be
checked and reconciled, however, NSL Clubs will have the
facility to e mail their teamsheets to John Beeston - a move
which will hopefully save them time as well as creating an
audit trail.
Commenting on the
initiative, NSL Registrar and Treasurer Beeston said '"This
should be ideal for Clubs wishing to use it. By doing things
this way, not only do we get the information we need more
quickly, Clubs have a hard copy to keep for future reference,
thus eliminating the need for piles of paper all over the
place! We appreciate that not everyone is computer literate
enough to do this at the moment, however we're hoping that
those involved will be prepared to invest a little time to
develop their IT skills as this will clearly benefit us all in
the long term. We hope to make this standard practice in the
near future and urge NSL Clubs to move with the times to help
us all progress". |

| DIARY
OF A GROUNDHOPPER - MARK TWO
The
following are some of the extremely positive observations of a
Groundhopper who attended the UHLSPORT NSL Senior Cup Quarter
Final between Calverton MW and Bestwood MW at Hollinwood Lane
which demonstrate the progress that Calverton have made in a
short period of time. Well done to Pete, John, Viv, Andy and
all associated with Welfare from the Management Committee.
‘I
park in the Welfare’s large car park in Calverton. The
village is very pleasant- but the surroundings are less than
attractive, it is next to a rubbish tip! However the playing
surface is immaculate, probably the best pitch in the county?
I buy the £1 programme but no admission fee is asked for. The
issue contains 24 glossy pages of information about the club
and its history, the village and Calverton’s teams. There is
an eight page photocopied insert about tonight’s match. In
short, this puts many higher league efforts to shame. I pay a
visit to the toilets and find the best gents room I have seen
at a non- league ground, and bettering most at league grounds
too. Clean, fragrant, all equipment present and functioning
and a pleasure to use’.
He
does, however make one negative comment, which we would like
all NSL players, managers, coaches and supporters to take on
board ‘An entertaining cup tie but with far too much abuse
aimed at the referee for my liking. Not a good example to the
young players watching’.
Groundhopper
sums up: ‘I recommend Hoppers to try a trip to Calverton.
They will be sure of a friendly welcome and a programme- just
try and avoid the Nottingham ring road!’

| RUDDINGTON
APPOINT NEW BOSS
UHLSPORT
NSL side Ruddington United today ended their search for a new
first team boss with the appointment of promising young
manager Tony Prior
.
36
year old Prior, who managed AC Bulwell to the Premier Division
Championship of the Notts Amateur Alliance last season, takes
over at the Elms Park outfit with immediate effect with his
prime objective being to improve on last season’s
disappointing league position which saw Rudd finish in the
bottom four. Prior, who served both AC and Framesmiths Arms as
a player, is delighted with the appointment and very much
looking forward to the challenge of bringing stability after a
series of recent managerial changes.
‘Ruddington
have a great set up behind the scenes and an excellent pitch,
therefore we should be able to attract players without too
much difficulty’ he said. ‘I have always given 100% and
expect the same from players. I want players who are prepared
to commit themselves to at least 95% of our games as bringing
in those who pick and choose their games is unfair on the
regulars. Players not prepared to give this level of
commitment are welcome to find other Clubs to play for! I have
a couple of players in mind to bring in and will be speaking
to them very soon now that the future is more certain’.
Ruddington
stalwart and ex- player Barry Sulley is staying on to assist
Prior in settling in with a view to starting pre season in the
next week to assess the overall playing strength. Any players
interested in joining Ruddington are asked to contact the new
boss on 07969 483423. Prior paid tribute to AC; ‘I really
enjoyed my time there and learnt a lot. I wish them all the
best for the future and hope our paths cross again sometime’.
Rudd
are still on the lookout for someone to manage their Reserves
for 2005/06. Anyone interested is asked to contact Ernie
Gadsby on 07785 726408

| B&Q
DO IT FOR CLIFTON
DIY giants B & Q
have demonstrated their support for local community football
with a generous donation of £5000 of materials to help
UHLSPORT NSL side Clifton FC refurbish their
Green Lane
clubhouse. Club spokesman Neil Hutchinson said "B&Q
have been great and their support will really help us continue
to provide quality facilities which are widely used by the
local community. The lads from the Club are doing all the
labour on the project themselves - giving their time free of
charge and we expect work to be completed in time for the
forthcoming 2005/06 season."
On the pitch,
Clifton
are expanding their adult playing capacity by entering a third
team in the Notts Amateur Alliance which they hope will bridge
the current gap between their successful junior sides and
their two UHLSPORT sides. Any other local businesses willing
to help Clifton FC are asked to contact Hutchinson on 07940

| SPONSORSHIP
CHANGES TO BOOST THE LEAGUE
Following
on from a successful first season as Nottinghamshire’s
leading Saturday men’s football league, the Notts Senior
League is delighted to announce a revised sponsorship deal
with main sponsors UHLSPORT. For the 2005/6 season, as well as
vital financial support to ensure the league has the funds to
develop, UHLSPORT Brand Manager
Dave Sanderson
has designed an attractive package which comprises a supply of
UHLSPORT’s brand new ‘accento’ matchball for each member
Club, plus two pairs of UHLSPORT ‘aquasoft’ goalkeeping
gloves. Match officials will also be supported by UHLSPORT,
whose brand is wholesaled into the
UK
by Reydon Sports plc of
Lenton Lane
. Every NSL official will be provided with an UHLSPORT warm up
top to add to the kit that they were provided in last season.
NSL Press Officer
Dick
Durrant commented; ‘We are delighted with the continuing
deal with UHLSPORT. As we enter the second year of what was
initially a three year deal, both ourselves and UHLSPORT are
pleased with the way things are going. Many such sponsorship
deals have floundered in the past due to a combination of a
lack of support from the leagues and limited support of the
brand by the Clubs. I am delighted to say that the NSL Clubs
have thrown themselves strongly behind UHLSPORT and supported
them 100%. We look forward to seeing this continue and there
is an early indication and willingness from both parties that
we can extend the deal beyond its current term. The UHLSPORT
brand has proved a competitive one and prices have remained
keen, so Clubs have no real reason to look elsewhere’. Local
sportswear retailer TriSport- run by Bob and Chris Norris,
have been added to the panel of retailers through who the 25%
discount on UHLSPORT products can be obtained, further
increasing the range of suppliers available to Clubs. Other
initiatives currently being developed are the production of
UHLSPORT advertising hoardings to be displayed around the
grounds and UHLSPORT corner flags for all grounds. The
possibility of using some of UHLSPORT’s contracted stars
such as Anti Niemi of Southampton and Blackpool boss Colin
Hendrie in one off coaching sessions is also being looked as
in an attempt to further increase the profile of the NSL in
the local game.

SIDE CHANGE AT HELM
The UHLSPORT Notts
Senior League is to have a new management team for its
Representative Side for 2005/06. Steve Clifford
of Notts Police and Graham Hunter of Boots Athletic have both
stood down due to work commitments to be replaced by two of
the brightest prospects in the area namely Calverton's Andy
Miller and Chris Munroe who helped guide Wollaton to the
double in the NSL's inaugural season.
The representative's
experienced a 100% record in their first season, thanks to
wins over Cotgrave in the Chairman's XI game, then Derbyshire
Police, the Midland Amateur Alliance in the Tsunami appeal
fixture, finishing off by hammering much fancied British
Prison Service. It is hoped that the game against the MAA will
become an annual affair to raise money for a good cause
locally with a game against the Central Midlands League very
much hoped for. The
Management Committee of the UHLSPORT NSL would like to wish
Chris and Andy all their new role whilst thanking Steve and
Graham for their considerable efforts. 'Steve and Graham are
both busy men' said Chairman Frank Hunt 'so for them to give
their time to run the side is great. They've done a fine job
and the new guys will have a hard act to follow'. |

| NEW
MANAGEMENT AT DIGBY STREET
UHLSPORT NSL side
Kimberley MW have announced Alf Stacey and Steve Towle as the
new head managerial partnership of their first team, Stacey
has vast managerial experience with Boots, Pelican and Magdala,
whilst former Notts County star Towle gave distinguished non-
league service to 'the chemists' along with the likes of
Arnold after quitting the pro game. Last season, the pair were
in charge at CML side Sandiacre Town Reserves, guiding them to
sixth place in the league.
Commenting on the
appointment, KMW Secretary Steve Hobster said 'We believe that
this is the best move for the Club. Alf and Steve know the
local game inside out and are well positioned to bring new
blood to Digby Street. We anticipate losing one or two players
over the summer, however the plans we have in place will
ensure that these players are replaced and that we begin the
new season stronger equipped than we were at the end of the
last one'.
UHLSPORT Press
Officer Dick Durrant welcomed the move 'The more experienced
managers we can attract into the NSL means we will attract
players from other leagues which will further enhance our own
profile and standards. We wish Alf and Steve all the best for
a successful spell at KMW'. |

CLIFFORD
– THE INTERVIEW
As
a schoolkid, Clifford played in the same team as ex Notts
County & Coventry City hardman Brian Kilcline. Starting
out, Clifford enjoyed spells at Santos & County Taverners
before forming Bestwood Park Rovers where he played alongside
good local talent including the likes of Tony Kelham and Gary
Langley. After a spell at Meridian, Clifford followed his old
manager Brian Harrison to Central Midlands outfit Nuthall
before joining the Police force. Playing in the Thursday
League for the Police, Clifford played out his career with
high success at Sunday side Thistledown Athletic (a side which
contained many from the famous Clifton All White team). After
damage to his knee ligaments, Clifford went into the coaching
side of the game within the Force, a position he still holds
today as Manager of the first team.
Steve, After winning the
Notts Alliance title last year, are you rather disappointed
that you didn't gain any silverware this time around? "In
2003/04 we won the Notts Alliance Senior League title, the
Notts Alliance Senior Cup and the Police Regional Cup. To
follow that was always going to be a difficult task.
Chris Young (former South Normanton Captain) and Tim
Jones retired from first team football, Wayne Bennett left to
try his luck at Southwell City and Dean Fenton decided to go
to Rainworth MW. Richard
Taylor was hardly used through risk of Injury as he is about
to join the Police and I have never known a season like it for
injuries. Our injury list would boost any side in the NSL.
The list included Neil Smith, Lee Bowditch, Rob
Griffin, Karl Thomas, Ed Priestly and James McDonaugh. Many
may not be aware but all our players, if not on a rest day,
have to take time off or book leave to represent the Force.
Years gone by meant that those chosen to represent the
Force would be allocated a number of hours to do so but this
is no longer the case and the nature of the job makes players
attendance often impossible.
I know I am often heard to moan about selection
problems but there can’t be many managers who turn up on a
Saturday having been told that half a dozen players won’t be
there because they have been called into work or refused time
off. In 2003/04 we used a total of 18 players but last season
we used twice that figure. I was disappointed that we didn’t make more of an
impression on the NSL but on the whole I am still proud of my
players performances last season."
Have you been happy with the
standard and setup of the NSL in it's debut season? "I
think it’s always difficult to gauge the standard of
football as Leagues change so drastically these days.
It’s only 15 years ago that Notts Police were playing
in the Alliance Senior League against Hucknall Town.
The Senior Division that year only had 4 other NSL
Clubs involved, which included Boots, Keyworth, Clifton and
Ruddington. The
remainder of the Clubs involved, like Dunkirk and Clipstone
are now playing in other Leagues or disbanded. The NSL has
enjoyed a good first Season and I firmly believe that it will
only get stronger. I
don’t think there is a great deal of difference between the
NSL and the Central Midlands other than the distance Clubs
have to travel. In the
Senior Cup Wollaton outplayed Dunkirk for much of the game but
were unfortunate to lose on penalties whilst we narrowly lost
to the same Club with a very weak side. I do believe that its
important to introduce promotion & relegation in order to
ensure the standard of football improves and the NSL becomes
an attractive proposition to Clubs wanting to progress. It’s
also important that Clubs strive to improve not only on the
pitch but also off it with the upgrading of their
facilities."
Your pitch at ROKO from time
to time gets slated a lot, is this a concern? is their plans
for a venue upgrade / change? "Many may remember that
Notts Police played on Carrington Sports Ground before moving
to Epperstone Manor. About
five years ago we were told Epperstone was being sold and
instructed to find a new ground. We then enjoyed a couple of years at Calverton MW before
having to move to ROKO. The
former civil service ground, although not centrally placed for
our Northern based players, was more than adequate during
2003/04. As time
has moved on the pitch and facilities became so poor that I
was forced to seek alternative options. I can now proudly
announce that we will now be playing our home fixtures at
Rolls Royce Leisure. The
ground can boast two excellent pitches, one with floodlighting
and a cracking clubhouse, which will allow us to entertain all
visitors in the correct manner."
What are your & your
clubs ambitions for next season? "Like all Managers I
want success on the field for both of our teams.
We not only play in the NSL but also compete in the
Police National Cup where we face such teams as the Met Police
and West Midlands. Recent recruits will now mean I will be able to field a
stronger side in this Competition and I would dearly like to
win that Cup. As far as success in the NSL is concerned we
will be doing our best to take some silverware back to
Hucknall. I would also love to see an NSL side win the Notts
Senior Cup. Many
of the Clubs think its good enough to get through to the
latter stages, which ensures they will be seeded the following
year. I think that Clubs should now reflect the ambitions of the
NSL by believing in their abilities and winning it.
On their day our top teams can beat anyone."
And beyond 2005/06? "I
think that this coming Season will be my last in my current
post with Notts Police. Once we are set in our new home I would like to think that
others could step up and get involved in various levels to
push the Club forward. This
will be my tenth year as Manager of the 1st eleven
and although I’ve had a cracking time I would like to have a
go at a more conventional Club.
In addition to the regular unavailability of players I
have other frustrations such as the fact the lads can’t
train together, turn up on time etc.
It’s not the fault of the players it’s just how it
is and often makes any success even more remarkable."
You have had some fine
performances this season, is their one in particular that
stands out? "I take pride in all our successes because of
the associated problems, which I have already outlined.
Wins against Arnold Southbank away with a weak side,
the share of the points at Calverton with a virtual second
string and the abandoned away game at Wollaton with the lads
having to carry me up front give me fond memories."
What about the worst
performance your club has had this season? "I can stand
losing to a better side, poor refereeing decisions or bad luck
but to lose because of lack of effort is unforgivable.
To answer the above would highlight this but I would
never want to take anything away from the opposition so I will
keep the answer to myself."
Finally, You have been
involved in managing the Rep side, have you enjoyed it?
"Daniel, this was one of the highlights
of last Season for me. When
I was asked to join the NSL committee I suggested a Rep side
and was honoured to kick it off.
Together with Graham Hunter (Boots 1st team
Manager) I have had a great time running the Rep side in
it’s first year with three great wins against sides who all
had players from a so called higher level of football.
Unfortunately not all the games we planned went ahead.
I would like to see the side play against one of the
sides from the local pro clubs and a Central Midlands Rep
side. I
think we have got some outstanding young talent in the NSL
who, with help and guidance could go onto making a living out
of the game. Football
is a strange game and success is all down to timing, i.e.
being spotted by the right person at the right time." |

SENIOR
DIVISION REVIEW - WOLLATON CONQUER SENIOR LEAGUE
Wollaton FC blitzed all
before them in the uhlsport Nottinghamshire Senior Leagues
debut season, massing 73 points which included 23 wins out of
32 games enabling the side to clinch the title as early as the
first week in April.
Wollaton led from the front,
winning their first ten games (the first four of those,
without conceding) letting only five goals in the process but
weren't the first team to lead the NSL table, after a couple
of heavy opening victories Kimberley MW took early centre
stage at the top before defeat in their third game to Notts
Police gave their victors chance to leapfrog the early pace
setters, which they did on August bank holiday against Arnold
Southbank. A 1-0 defeat five days later at the hands of Boots
Athletic who after much rebuilding in pre-season started
indifferently, gave Wollaton the chance to take top spot, and
from their on in the opening weeks of September, they stayed
ever since.
With victories seeming
endless for the leaders and everyone else dropping points
around them, Wollaton drew up a significent lead at the top of
the table, but that lead was to be reduced, with their first
defeat of the season at the end of October to the hands of the
ever improving Calverton MW, who's young squad had already
been raising a few eyelids in the Division after previously
finishing bottom of the Notts Alliance Senior Division.
Calverton won 1-0 thanks to regular scorer Michael Nestor,
helping spark of their previous weeks win at Awsworth Villa,
the side continued to win six more and draw one of their next
seven fixtures.
Also going well in the
Autumn months were Linby CW, after a half decent start they
were pushing for a top three place and were half way through a
twelve match unbeaten run (which started and ended against
Wollaton). Elsewhere Notts Police in second place were still
going strong, with only three defeats by the turn of the year
they were regarded as main title challengers to Wollaton's
bid. That threat by 'the Police' was begining to be well known
at the Sports Assosiation, after the leaders slipped up a week
later after defeat at Calverton, this time Keyworth United
beat them (the only side not to be beaten by Wollaton in the
league during the season), before draws against Boots and
Ruddington had punters wondering if the bubble had burst at
the top.
A Fantastic Christmas though
put Wollaton back on track, and with crushing wins against
Siemens EWS (3-0), Awsworth Villa (7-0), Notts Police 5-1 (who
were going through a mini blip of their own) and Arnold
Southbank 6-0, normal service was very much resumed. Guided by
the managerial tricycle that is Munroe, Benner & Walker,
Wollaton won a further eight of their next nine league
matches, one of those called pivitol, in the side becoming
champions as they saw off the nearest challengers in any kind
of form Linby CW in front of a big Church Lane crowd.
At the bottom, things
weren't looking to good for Magdala Amateurs who buy April
hadn't a win under their belt in 2005, Sandhurst were also
struggling with them Awsworth Villa and Ruddington United
who's couple of deducted points, pushed them right in the
unwanted wooden spoon battle. With the title seemingly only a
matter of time away for Wollaton, focus began to switch to the
race for second, and with Notts Police and Kimberley MW (not
helped by the departure of Manager George Hulley) faltering
away, Calverton MW, Linby CW and now Arnold Southbank all
fancied their chances of grabbing the next best thing. Bank,
threw a terrific run of form, were still unbeaten in 2005 up
until May.
With Easter nearing
Wollaton's championship looked destined, after seven straight
wins the side expected to be clinch the title on bank holiday
weekend at the restructuring Kimberley MW, with the leagues
leading goalscorer Julian Wright, however amongst their squad,
the home side had other ideas and postponed Wollaton's title
celebrations with a late 3-2 win. That postponement should
have been for just two days, but Attenborough, going through
one of their best runs of form in the season were also willing
to give nothing away, blip number two for the champions elect
as Boro claimed their highlight of the season with a 3-1 win.
The blip, and bursting bubble (like the first time) didn't
last long though, as a week later Wollaton finally got it
right, to clinch the championship with a 2-0 win over Bestwood
MW who's priority's in an otherwise average season lay
elsewhere in the County Cup.
Wollaton drew their
remaining two games in relaxed spirit allowing the
unthreatened gap at the top to be closed a little, just who
would it be that closed it the most, remained to be seen.
Favourites at the start of April, looked like Calverton MW,
with third placed Linby CW their nearest challengers (but with
games in hand) to play along with the ever improving Boots,
Bestwood and in form Southbank, CMW needed only a pair of wins
with Linby likeley to slip up once or twice in their final
eight matches. With Southbank leaving it a little to late
(with many games in hand due to their cup successes) to
sustain fourth place ahead of Notts Police, the race for
second became a two horse race, and that battle should have
gone in Calverton's favour after sharing the spoils in early
April's crunch tie with Linby, a 2-2 draw meant destiny was in
their own hands, Calverton however after holding down second
since December, didn't want to read their own script and
failed to win any of their remaining three games, allowing
Linby, to pretty impressively take them in the closing weeks,
Linby's form helped by the goalscoring partnership of Start
& Balm finished up unbeaten in ten.
Bottom place in the end went
to Sandhurst after Magdala stayed unbeaten in five of their
six crucial games in April, Magdala leapfrogged Ruddington who
lost all four of their final league fixtures, fourth from
bottom was Awsworth Villa. Boots & Clifton climbed up the
table to 6th and 7th respectively after good late form,
Kimberley MW and Siemens EWS fell away with Kimberley in
particular, blaming a poor end to the season. Attenborough
comfortably sandwiching the sides in mid-table recording 13
wins and losses in their 32 league games. Keyworth, Cotgrave
& Bestwood make up the numbers with positions they will
hope to improve on in 2005/06. |

DIVISION
ONE REVIEW - ATHLETIC
RECORDS CONTRIBUTE IN TITLE WIN
Boots Athletic Res
overwhelmed the uhlsport Nottinghamshire Senior League First
Division in it's debut year, setting records along the way as
the team totalled 73 points out of a possible 84 on offer to
win the title by nine points over Cotgrave. Boots went as far
as the first week in March, still undefeated in all
competitions and lost their first league game to Wollaton Res
in early April, a massive 24 league games unbeaten from when
the campaign kicked off in August. The side, marshalled by NSL
vice chairman / press officer, Dick Durrant won 23 times in
total, also setting the record for successive wins in which
they managed eleven.
After Attenborough Res set
the early pace in the league with three wins out of three,
Boots had it pretty much their own way by the end of December.
With Cotgrave Res, Arnold Southbank Res and Keyworth United
Res also in contention after good early form, Durrant's men
were keen not to take their feet off the gas. By mid-January
the side had massed a tremendous lead at the top, thanks to
wins over all their nearest rivals. But with the side in cup
competition so frequently, others were able to close the gap,
despite having played more games. Cotgrave pressed and pressed
and with sixteen wins out of eighteen with only two defeats,
they were favourites to catch the chemists at the top, and
Wollaton Res could not be countered out, after an in-different
start to the season, the side had pulled a run of games
together where they had scored 55 goals in just 12 games, only
losing to Boots in the process, they had scalps such as Linby
Res (8-0), Cotgrave Res (7-1), Attenborough Res (7-2) and
fives with and without reply against the likes of Ruddington,
Calverton & Awsworth. With the rest of the table taking
points off each other, it became clear that by the time father
Christmas had turned to cupid and was sending valentines
cards, it would be very much a three horse race.
After a slip up against
Keyworth, Wollaton Res were again looking promising with
record league wins, first against Magdala Amateurs 11-1, and a
month later in the opening weekend of March, a humiliating
14-0 victory over Kimberley MW Res which included a double
hat-trick for the leagues eventual top goalscorer Anthony
Fragola. Cotgrave Res however were slipping up, and without a
win in February up until the third week in March, it looked
like they would blow second spot let alone any slim chance
they had of winning the title. That typified as Boots,
although only playing four league games through out February
and March combined, just kept on winning.
By Easter the title looked
as if it would only be a matter of time for Boots to wrap up,
but signs of a stutter by the favourites evidentially came
with a scoreless draw with rapidly progressing Calverton
before a defeat to nearest challengers Wollaton only a couple
of days later, the chase looked to be hotting up.
Elsewhere the likes of
Arnold Southbank Res and Notts Police Res were keeping things
interesting carrying out good runs placing them in the top
six, at the other end Awsworth Villa Res won their first game
in 21 against Keyworth United Res, Magdala Amateurs Res,
registering only their second win of 2005 with a penultimate
6-1 victory over Siemens EWS not enough to avoid finishing
bottom. Entertainment wise Clifton and Kimberley (who were
both known to have conceded and scored their fair share of
goals) played out a last day thirteen goal thriller, Clifton
winning 8-5. And playing wise the likes of Eaton, Wilson and
Price were all credit to their sides although their clubs
mid-table positions.
With no time for Boots to
get over their premature celebratory hangover which could have
been imposed after the Wollaton match, the table toppers were
back in business only three days later as they played out one
of their games in hand against Awsworth Villa, a 2-0 win for
the side thanks to regular scorer Lee Stanley meant a win
against Cotgrave (still in third but with games in hand) would
see 'the chemists' take the title midway through April. Goals
from Tim Emery and Ibby Arsali, despite Dave Cyrek scoring
another on his way to 27 for the campaign meant that Boots had
it all wrapped up with a game to play. That slip up didn't
cost Cotgrave to much either, needing to win their last three
games and with Wollaton losing their final match of the
campaign, the Welfare still had chance to snatch second, and
with a couple of hard-fought wins it was in fact Cotgrave who
leapfrogged Wollaton taking runners up spot by four points,
leaving Wollaton Res a little frustrated, especially after
massively outscoring both their rivals.

LEAGUE
CUP REVIEW -WOLLATON AT THE DOUBLE
Already
boasting the Senior Division Championship, a title they
captured in the opening weekend of April, Wollaton FC crowned
off a memorable season with victory in the NSL Senior Cup
after defeating Arnold Southbank 3-1 in the final at
Calverton. Two first half strikes from their hot young striker
Dan Smith, and a goal just after half time by Ryan Perkins
gave Wollaton enough of a cushion before a late John Harte
penalty could resurrect any slim chance of a comeback.
Wollaton's
cup final delight was also shared by Attenborough Reserves.
After winning the Junior Section of the competition with an
extra time defeat over Calverton MW Reserves. Alan Sewell gave
Calverton an early lead which was cancelled out by Justin
Whatmore nine minutes before the brake. With the scores level
at full time but Calverton down to ten men after Richards had
been sent off, it was left to top goalscorer John Eaton to
come off the bench and grab the limelight with two goals
sparking off scenes of jubilant joy amongst the Boro faithfull.
With
the competition obviously in it's debut year, both the Senior
Section and Reserve Section Cups First Rounds only involved
sixteen teams. To accommodate this and with seventeen teams in
the Senior Section Cup, a preliminary round was played (drawn
out of the hat) between Cotgrave CW United and Awsworth Villa
in which the homeside won 4-2. With only fifteen teams in the
Reserve Section of the competition, it was Keyworth United who
were drawn the lucky side that received a bye into the Quarter
Finals.
With
all the Round One sides knowing the likeliness of who they
would be playing in the next round, an entertaining first
stage began on the opening Saturday of March. Favourites, and
eventual winners Wollaton trouncing Kimberley MW 5-0, and with
36 goals in the days five other games, Linby and Magdala both
had high scoring odd goal victories over Notts Police and
Clifton respectively, Cotgrave, Ruddington and Calverton MW
had rather more convincing away wins seeing them through into
the next round.
A
week later, in what might have been described as knockout
March, the Reserve Section of the Competition was underway,
with the game of the day undoubtedly between the champions
elect and one of their fiercest rivals, whoever won the game
between Boots Athletic Res and Wollaton Res, would most
probably be the favourites to take the competition, Wollaton
it was, to impose Boots first defeat of any kind in all
competitions, 2-1 the away side won. Two other odd goal in
three wins were at ROKO, where Notts Police Res were beat by
Siemens EWS Res, and at the Dip, where Arnold Southbank Res
beat Kimberley Res. More convincing were Cotgrave, who beat
Ruddington 5-0, Calverton, who beat Magdala Res 3-0 and Linby
Res, who edged Clifton out of the competition 2-0.
With
two outstanding Senior Section games rather confusingly played
on the same day as two of the Quarter Finals, because the
participating clubs involvement in 'other' competition, Arnold
Southbank saw off Boots to set up a last eight game against
Cotgrave, and Bestwood MW beat Siemens EWS 2-0 ensuring a
mid-week tie at home against Calverton. The days Quarter
Finals saw Wollaton cruise past Ruddington 5-1, and Linby edge
past plucky Magdala 2-1.
All
four Reserve Section Quarter Finals were played on the 26th
March, with favourites Wollaton Res ensuring a semi spot with
a 5-0 win at Linby, Cotgrave going out 3-0 at Keywoth Res,
Attenborough getting the better of their derby rivals Siemens
with four without reply and Calverton Res marching on with a
tight 2-1 win at Arnold Southbank Reserves. ASB's first team
doing a little better than their seconds, with a same day 5-2
win over Cotgrave CW United in the only Senior Section tie of
the day. Calverton
MW, ten days later became the last team in the competition to
gain a semi final slot with a 3-1 win over Bestwood.
The
Semi Finals of the Reserve Section of the competition thrown
up a couple of surprises, Cup Favourites Wollaton Res went
down to Attenborough 3-1, and Calverton MW got the better of
the ties slight favourites Keyworth United, in a seven goal
thriller setting up a final which will be fondly remembered
mostly by Attenborough's squad, staff and support.
With
the two Senior Section Semi Finals pitting the leagues
eventual top four, either game could have been separated by
the drawing of straws. The closest being Arnold Southbank's
win over Linby CW, only five days after 'Banks' County Cup
final win against Bestwood MW in extra time, both sides
battled out a tense and tough encounter at Calverton MW, with
a solitary Karl Clowery strike before the hour being enough to
snatch victory for ASB. Wollaton made slightly lighter work of
their tussle of the top teams, but not without a sweat, a goal
four minutes from time by Perkins, ensured Calverton's
persistant pressure being 2-1 down would mean nothing, the
already league champions ensuring a 3-1 victory would be good
enough to take them through to a memorable final where they
would clinch the double. Anyone remember Preston North End in
1888? |

COUNTY
CUP REVIEW - BANK FLY FLAG FOR NSL
Arnold Southbank highlighted
a superb debut NSL season with a Notts FA Intermediate Section
Cup final win over league rivals Bestwood MW at Gedling Town's
Riverside Ground in April. The game itself could have gone
either way with Bestwood taking an early two goal lead thanks
to a Dakers free kick and a Wass header. Pressure and
persistence though from the pre-match favourites eventually
paid off in the 74th minute when Clowery pulled one back, and
in an entertaining climax to the game Justin Whittle then
grabbed a late equalizer setting up extra time. In a tense
first half it was Bestwood who edged into the lead again,
Greeley it was putting Welfare into the driving seat, but a
hotly disputed penalty despatched by Harte brought Bank back
on to level terms before Paul McMillan grabbed the headlines
with a winner a minute before a possible penalty shoot out.
Both sides in an
entertaining match earned plaudits from around the County and
rightly so, after seeing off some of the best sides in the
area to reach the final. The Intermediate and Junior Section
Cup's started way back in the opening weekend of October 2004.
Bank, handed a tough home tie against the previous years Notts
Amateur Champions Oakdale, edged their opponents 2-1 whilst
Bestwood saw off Thoresby CW Res away from home, half of the
other fourteen NSL sides entering the Intermediate Section Cup
went through, highlights being Sandhurst's 8-1 home win over
Bassingfield and Linby's 6-0 win at Dunkirk Res. In the two
all NSL ties played in the first round, competition holders
Boots Athletic Res beat Calverton MW 3-2 and Notts Police Res
beat Clifton Res 3-1. Only Arnold Southbank Res and Calverton
MW Res (who recieved a bye) out of the five NSL participants
in the Junior Section Cup made it into the next round, Bank
beat Greyhounder 4-3 at home.
The Competitions Senior
Section got underway on October 16th, featuring some of the
best Non League sides in the County, NSL outfit's Attenborough,
Awsworth Villa, Kimberley MW and Ruddington United all found
it hard going against quality opposition, each failing to make
it through to the next stage. The successes being Boots
Athletic, who edged Clipstone Welfare 4-3, Notts Police, who
saw off Rolls Royce Leisure 3-1 and Clifton, who went to, and
beat Welbeck CW 4-2. In a delayed match seventeen days
later, Wollaton took CML supreme leaders Dunkirk to penalties
and missed the chance to go through by the skin of their
teeth. The competitions 'other' NSL participant Cotgrave CW
United entered at the third round stages after being seeded
with the likes of Eastwood, Arnold & Hucknall Town
following a decent cup run the previous year.
With the Intermediate and
Junior Sections reaching the second stage of the season's
competition, eventual winners Arnold Southbank were drawn at
home again to Notts Amateur Alliance opposition. This time
Bank beat Oakdales bitter rivals Sneinton Town 4-2, to set up
a third round tie with Eastwood Town Reserves. Again NSL sides
went crashing out of the competition with Linby, Kimberley Res,
Wollaton Res, Sandhurst and Ruddington Res all losing to leave
just five NSL teams left in the competition's last sixteen. In
the Junior Section, Southbank Reserves overwhelmed Southwell
City's A team 5-0, but Calverton Res where comprehensively
beaten 5-1 at Kingsway.
Hotting up in the Senior
Section's last round before the seeded sides enter, and NSL
outfits bidding for the big guns were Boots, Clifton and Notts
Police. Boots Athletic joining the seeded sides (where they
would play excitingly against league rivals Cotgrave at the
next stage) were comfortable in a tricky looking trip away at
Forest Town, eventually winning 5-2. Clifton & Notts
Police however were both edged out by the odd goal, Clifton
losing 2-1 at home to Rainworth MW, whilst Notts Police lost
3-2 to Wollaton's First Round conqueror Dunkirk.
In the final County Cup
action of 2004, December's round of games gave the chance for
the Intermediate and Junior Section entrants to bid for a
Quarter Final place. Arnold Southbank, pitted against Eastwood
Town Reserves in the intermediate Section rose to the occasion
in an entertaining 4-2 victory, Competition holders Boots
Athletic overcame their most difficult match to date with a
2-1 win over Basford United, whilst Bestwood trounced BG
Newark 6-1, Notts Police Res overcame the organised Lady Bay
2-1 and in an all NSL tie Magdala Amateurs beat Siemens EWS
3-1. The Junior Section Third Round was as far as any NSL
entrant got with Arnold Southbank Res going out 1-0 at
Kingsway, who saw off their second Senior League opponent.
Tuesday January 25th gave
Boots Athletic and Cotgrave CW United the chance for seeding
in the 2005/06 competition. The winners automatically being
able to sit out the opening rounds next season, but more
importantly, almost guaranteeing a tie with one of the
Counties leading Non League clubs. In a tense but entertaining
game played at Cotgrave CW's Woodview, it was Boiots Athletic
that made the Quarter Final stages with a 1-0 win thanks to a
Kevin Forde free kick a minute before the half time brake.
Before the Senior Section
Quarter Finals, their was the small matter of the Intermediate
last eight and with five of the competitions teams
representing the NSL, a semi final place for at least one was
assured and bettered, with all but Magdala Amateurs going
through. Boots Res beat Bilborough 1-0, Bestwood MW saw off
Trent University 1-0 and in an all NSL tie Arnold Southbank
overcame Notts Police Res by the odd goal in five.
With both Senior Quarter
Finals & Intermediate Section Semi Finals being played on
the same day in March, focus was on the days big game, and
Boots Athletic's reward for reaching the last eight, a home
tie to NCEL flyers Gedling Town. The Non Leaguers eventually
proving too much for their plucky hosts running out
comfortable 4-1 winners. In entertaining Intermediate semi
finals Arnold Southbank needed extra time to see off NAA
league leaders AC Bulwell, with fitness eventually prooving
too much, Mark Connors side ran out 6-3 winners with three
goals in the extra thirty minutes. The days major surprise
came at the Workshops, with Bestwood MW beating holders Boots
Athletic 2-0 to set up an exciting final, which they could
quite easily have won. What might have been for Bestwood,
certainly was for Southbank, who crowned off a fine
competition edging out their rivals in a seven goal 120 minute
thriller. |

| DEBUT
SEASON COMES TO END
On
behalf of the management committee, could we please express
out deepest thanks to all clubs, players, spectators, our
magnificent sponsor uhlsport and every one involved in making
the NSL a success in its first season. We
accept that there is room for improvement in the league,
whether it be on the management front, or club front &
with hindsight things we would have done differently.
Our first aim is to
revisit all grounds again and ensure that improvements asked
for last season have been met. This
has been a very steep learning curve for me in my first season
as the league secretary, and indeed for all the management
committee. The
new season will be upon us shortly, in the mean time there is
an AGM to attend. Presentation night to arrange, and of course
the golf day. Enjoy
the break from football, enjoy the Saturday afternoon trips
shopping with the wife. We
look forward to working with you all again in the near future
& to build on the foundations we have laid down over the
past season.
Thank you all once
again.

IT'S
DOUBLE DELIGHT FOR WOLLATON
Wollaton,
UHLSPORT NSL Senior Division Champions, clinched a memorable
double as they beat fourth placed Arnold Southbank 3 – 1 in
front of a large crowd of over 200 at Calverton MW’s
excellent Hollinwood Lane ground last night.
It
was Bank who started the brighter, with White’s header
glancing the angle, before Dan Smith of Wollaton lifted his
one on one effort over Scott Clay in the ASB goal but also
cleared the bar. The first goal came in the 36th
minute as Bank were caught in possession going forward.
Wollaton, as is so characteristic of their play, moved play
from end to end swiftly. Tom Simpson fed DAN SMITH and this
time, the languid youngster found the net. Harte was then
inches away from equalising and Clowery’s touch let him down
when well placed as Bank pushed hard to get on level terms.
Five minutes later though, it was 2 – 0 as ASB again
surrendered the ball cheaply. Mick Grinion made ground and
produced a pinpoint cross which SMITH headed powerfully past
Clay.
HT
2 – 0
RYAN
PERKINS wasted a one on one which would have sealed the game
in the 48th minute, before putting the final nail
in Bank’s cup coffin on 54, clipping home at the end of a
sweeping move from Grinion’s through ball with ASB’s
defence appealing in vain for offside.
It
was now all Wollaton, although Stanhope had to be at his best
to deny White. At the other end, Clay was equal to a fierce
Simpson drive. The 69th minute saw Bank thrown a
lifeline as Mr White awarded a penalty on his assistant Mr
Brown’s advice for Savidge’s foul on McMillan. JOHNNY
HARTE duly dispatched the spot kick, despite Stanhope getting
fingertips to it to set up a tense last twenty minutes.
Wollaton
almost grabbed a fourth, but Clay produced a fine point blank
save to deny Smalley, however ASB were not quite finished with
Martin and McMillan drawing a superb double save from
Stanhope. Bank were fortunate not to concede a penalty at the
death as Steele hauled Smith down, leaving Stanhope to have
the last word of a pulsating game with a block from Harte.

GOALS GIVE BORO THE CUP
Attenborough Reserves
overcame the considerable challenge of Calverton MW Reserves
3-1 after extra time on an excellent surface at Cotgrave
Welfare to become the first winners of the UHLSPORT NSL
Junior Cup.
In an excellent game, well
refereed by Mick Leslie, Boro made the early running with
Thompson hitting the bar and Richards making a great goal
line clearance from the rebound. Bennett in the Welfare goal
then made a superb save from Whatmore before his side went
ahead with their first real attack. Danny Beattie was
allowed too much space down the left and his low cross was
nudged home by skipper ALAN SEWELL
Boro
keeper Reid made a magnificent
save in the 23rd minute to keep out Warner's header. Boro
got onto level terms in the 36th minute after indecision
between Percival and Bennett allowed the impressive JUSTIN
WHATMORE to nip in and fire home across the keeper.
After the break Boro began
the stronger of the two sides. Calverton's tempers began to
fray with bookings for Richards and York, the former of the
two was to prove costly later on. Taggart went close twice
for Boro and Wilkins was denied by a top drawer Bennett save
as The Blues got on top, although Nestor almost won it for
Welfare, shooting over when well placed.
The key moment of the
match came in the 93rd minute, as Richards crudely hacked
down James Birtles, son of UHLSPORT NSL President Garry.
Birtles was carried off and Richards justifiably sent off by
Mr Leslie, leaving Calverton facing the prospect of playing
extra time with ten tired men.
Boro made the extra man
tell to good effect, although they had to wait until the
103rd minute before going ahead. Again it was the
influential Whatmore who started the move- his great run
seeing him skate round the flailing Sewell and York before
finding sub JOHN EATON who produced a class finish into the
bottom corner. The remining period was dominated by Boro and
it was no surprise to see them seal it with eight minutes
remaining. Whatmore saw his corner cleared, however he kept
his cool to pick out EATON whose 30th goal of the season
sparked wild celebrations and left Welfare wondering what
might have been had they kept eleven men on the pitch.
Attenborough Reserves:
Reid, Thompson, Jerzak, Flinders, Gould, Nesbitt, Lawrence,
Birtles, Taggart, Wilkins, Whatmore. Subs: Eaton, S Lee,
Terry, A Lee, Wilson
Calverton MW
Reserves:Bennett, Dixon, Harrison, Percival, Richards,
Melvin, York, Warner, Sewell, Nestor, Beattie. Subs: Payne,
Hodgeson, Mapplebeck

BANK
FROM BEHIND TO WIN THE CUP
Arnold Southbank are the
newest holders of the Nottinghamshire County Football
Association Intermediate Section cup after beating fellow
uhlsport Notts Senior League side Bestwood MW in a thrilling
final at Gedling Town FC's Riverside Ground on Thursday night
(14 April). In a topsy-turvy seven goal thriller that needed
extra time, Paul MacMillan secured the win for Southbank with
a minute remaining of the two hours played.
The form book was
immediately thrown out of the window as pre-match favourites
and unbeaten in fifteen, Bank, were two behind before they
could get out of first gear. First, and within a few minutes a
Dakers free kick made it 1-0 to Bestwood, and inside ten, club
captain Jonathon Wass headered home to make it 2-0. That's how
it stayed until the 74th minute of the game before Southbank's
leading scorer Karl Clowery pulled one back after coming on as
sub, setting up a frantic final fifteen minutes of football.
Bestwood, looking like they would take the trophy for so long
couldn't hold out under Southbank pressure and conceded the
equaliser with little over five minutes remaining of the game,
Whittle it was who made it 2-2 and ASB could have wrapped it
up in normal time but for Clowery poking wide and captain
Irons before him, hitting a post.
In a tense first half of
extra time Greeleys persistence edged Welfare back into the
lead and again put them in the driving seat for the trophy,
but unfortunately for them, the spirited Southbank refused to
lie down, and described by Notts Senior League Press Officer
Dick Durrant "as heartbreaking circumstances for Bestwood"
, took the trophy from under oppostition noses, first Paul
MacMillan went down in the box and was awarded a hotly
disputed penalty for Harte to cooly slot home, and as the
dreaded penalty shoot out situation was edging ever nearer, in
the 119th minute the increasingly influential Irons slid in
MacMillan whose finish broke Bestwood hearts and won the game
for the Bank. A wonderful night for Southbank described by
Chairman Ken Steele as "a great night in the clubs
history" and although disappointed, Bestwood were also
fantastic credit to the league they play in. A fantastic Cup
final won in a fairytale way. |

ANNOUNCE NEWEST MEMBERS
The Management Committee of the UHLSPORT
NSL are delighted to announce that Caribbean Cavaliers of the
Midland Amateur Alliance have been offered, and accepted, a
place in the league for the 2005/06 season.
Cavaliers have resigned from the MAA who have wished them all
the best in their new venture and will bring both 1st &
2nd XIs into the NSL. Six applications were received by the
NSL and, after much deliberation, Cavaliers came out on top
based on a number of factors including playing strength,
facilities and financial position. Based at the old Notts
Police ground in Carrington, Cavs have invested heavily in
their facilities and currently top the MAA, having won the
competition last season.
Commenting on the decision, NSL Chairman Frank Hunt said 'We
are delighted to welcome Cavs into the NSL and are convinced
that they will perfom well both on and off the field. They
have a proven track record and some great plans and we very
much look forward to working with them to build on our
successful first season as a league. Long term, however, we
have plans for a third division and are sure we can achieve
our goals given time'.
Sandhurst and Bestwood MW will also be entering Reserve sides
next season, meaning that two divisions, both with 18 teams
will comprise the NSL next season which will make things
easier regarding fixtures.
