NIDGES
WEEKEND PREVIEW
Thursday
4 March 2010
In
the precision training Nottinghamshire Senior Division, Clifton FC
find themselves sitting pretty with a five point gap over the
chasing pack. Now many peoples favourites for the title, the whites
have played a game more than both second placed Basford United and
Bilborogh Pelican. Chris Driffill and James Turner's side will not
be taking anything for granted as they travel to Kimberley Miners
Welfare's Digby Street ground. In fact last time the sides met it
was Welfare who came away with the win.
After a week away from action, Andy Benner and Chris Munroe's second
placed Basford find themselves at home and facing a Boots Athletic
side who are keen to battle back after two heavy defeats, which have
seen the side slip back from the leading pack. As both Clifton, who
drew with a battling Bulwell side last week, and Bilborough Pelican,
who suffered their heaviest defeat ever in the NSL, both dropped
points precious points, the Greenwich Avenue based side will be keen
to keep the pressure on for the title battle. There are now only
fourteen games left for many sides and every point counts.
At the Brian Wakefield Memorial Ground, all are still reeling from
one of the worst performances ever, from a Bilborough Pelican side.
In fact suprisingly club Chairman and first team manager Glenn
Russell was both lost for words and ideas after the 6-2 defeat away
at Keyworth last week. There was talk of the side now being out of
the title battle after now loosing six games this campaighn.
However, as the table shows, the side are still very much in with a
shout of retaining their crown should Clifton or Basford slip up.
Nothing can be taken for granted by anyone, as we have seen that
this is a league were anyside can beat anyone on the day. More
suprises are bound to be just around the corner.
Pelican travel to Caribbean Cavaliers this week to face another very
unpredictable side.
Should the top three slip up again, the best of the rest see's 5th
placed Hucknall Rolls Liesure host bitter rivals Linby CW at Watnall
road. Linby have struggled this season, but will be keen to keep up
their winning record against their neighbours.
Sixth placed Bulwell have a day off as they take stock from their
battling draw against the top side last week.
The side now looking favourites for the drop, Ruddington Village,
had a close battle mid week v Rolls and were unlucky not to come
away with at least a valuable point. This week they have another
tough battle as they travel up the road to face a bouyant Keyworth
United, who have got to be full of confidence after last weeks
suprise trouncing of Pelican. Village have built up a reputation as
a young battling side, who's heads never drop and have the ability
to cause an upset at any time. Many will be hoping this popular side
beat the drop, but it's becoming a tough ask for Steve Wilson's
boys.
On the back of a six game unbeaten run, Mark Turner's Cotgrave side
are waiting in the wings to move into the top six. They face a
struggling Magdala side at Woodview and are favourites to come away
with another three points.
Finally mid table Wollaton host Notts Police at the WSA.
In other news, Linby CW have set a provisional date for the start of
a new dressing room complex at their Church Lane Ground which is May
2012. With Ricky Stevenson of the Nottinghamshire FA helping with
the search of a grant and Cllr Mick Murphy also looking in to a
funding pledge. The club have already planned some fund raising
evenings themselves starting on Saturday 17th April with 'A night at
Nottingham Races' organised by Matt Keetley, an all day barbeque and
fun day in May, a Charity Bike Ride to Skegness in the summer and
another fun day barbeque over August Bank Holiday. Anybody with any
further ideas can contact club secretary Ade Ward on adrian.ward70@ntlworld.com
Well worth a mention this week are second division side Vernon
Villa. The side have broken the division's unbeaten record with a
run of thirteen without loss. Infact they have lost only twice in
their nineteen games played. The side refuse to give up on the tough
battle to throw season long leaders Nottinghamshire off the top.
This is a battle well worth keeping an eye on as it promises to go
right down to the wire. Well done to all invilved at Villa.
Mid week catch up, Carlton Town Academy proved the shock of the
first round, all be it a prolonged shock after beating high flying
First Division Wollaton Reserves in the John Pye Reserve Section
League Cup. Second Division Carlton knocked out their rivals in a
2-1 win on Tuesday.
In the Senior Division, Hucknall Rolls Leisure move to fourth in the
table following a 2-1 win over Ruddington whilst Greenwood Meadows
Res beat Bilborough Pelican Res 3-1.
Finally, the NSL Management Committee would like to echo the
messages of condolence across the footballing world, after the sad
loss of Macclesfield Town and former stags manager Keith Alexander
who his untimely passing on Wednesday morning. A True footballing
gent.
precision training NSL Senior Division
All games now kick off at 3pm
Basford United V Boots Athletic
Second placed, Basford 1sts welcome 4th place Boots to Greenwich
Avenue for what is sure to be a close game between 2 very well
matched teams who have split the honours over the last 2 seasons and
who both have aspirations to be in the mix come the latter part of
the campaign. United will have to cope without the considerable
absence of leading goal scorer Kevin Walker who notched both the
goals in the 2-2 draw earlier this campaign, Kev is away so United
managers Andy Benner and Chris Munroe will be looking to the likes
of Justin Cookie Evans & Lewis Johnson to spearhead the United
attack and new signing Damien Robinson is expected to feature as
well as flanker PJ Shiggins who has only played 1 game since
Christmas due to Work commitments. Ash MacPherson comes into the
game in a fine vein of goal scoring form and United will be hoping
the powerhouse flanker continues his impressive showings. Other
noticeable absences Sat sees midfielders Juree Staples, Rusharn
Bennett and defender Mark Foster still not yet ready for action but
getting closer by the day . A massive boost for everyone associated
with Basford United sees Richard Oakes making his long awaited
return from a knee injury sustained for the 1st team last Sept,
Richard has targeted 30 minutes for the reserves on Saturday and we
hope this is the start of his recuperation.
Full Squad ; Curtis MacDonald, Tobias Richardson , Brendan Shiggins,
Luke Humphries, Gary Wright, Mark Dimech, Lee Carter, Chris Marks,
Ash MacPherson, Lewis Johnson,
Damien Robinson, Justin Evans, PJ Shiggins, Tom Hickey, Brett Duffy,

Boots go to Basford in need of a morale boosting win as their awful
form has seen The Chemists slip well adrift of the leading group.
The sides drew 2 - 2 at Watnall Road earlier in the season and Boots
will be hoping they can get somewhere near their form that day. Kyle
Crofts (concussion) and Ian Marley (gashed ankle) Jack Smith (ankle)
and Micky Lucas (hamstring) are all injury doubts.
Likely squad from; Grayling, Willows, Crofts, Holt, Bowles, Jones,

is back from suspension are both doubts after a reacurrances of on
going injuries.
Cotgrave Welfare V Magdala Amateurs
Cotgrave are without Chris Waddley through injury this week and Dom
Lynas who is at a wedding. They will give a late test to Ben Smedley
who is still struggling with a knee injury. Andy Bee and Lee Penley
return to the squad and manager Mark Turner hopes to have a new
signing in place before Kick off. Squad: Worster, Richards, Lynn,
Springthorpe, Royston, A Bee, Mchugh, Smedley, Abbott, Penley,
Jackson, Frame, Horton, Sallis, Archer.
As far as the Dala camp are concerned it's the same old, same
old........... as they are still struggling for consistency. Steve
Hillier and Alex Lumsden return this week but the side lose Ashley
Robinson - after the kick on his leg last week, only for the doctor
to tell him not to play again on it again ever. Clearly all at the
club are hoping this is an over reaction. The side are awaiting
results of Chris Wright and Matt Kearns fitness tests. Long term
absentees include; Mark Curry, Martin Kearns and Danny Burke. Chris
Hankinson is still away on holiday.
Squad; J Mason, D Charlton, D Bentley, A Lumsden, R Lucas, J
Kweincinski, A Baker, R Whyman, R Powell, A Scarborough, C Wright, S
Hillier, J Wooley, J Hyman and J Bentley.
Hucknall Rolls Leisure V Linby CW
Rolls welcome bitter local rivals Linby to Watnall Road on Saturday
hoping to break a derby hoodoo. Since forming the Club in 2007 Rolls
they haven't beaten Linby 1st's in 4 attempts... losing 3 of those
games. After scraping past Ruddington on Tuesday Rolls will need to
play a lot better for what is a much tougher task on paper. Lee Soar
is still missing through work but Ian Paterson is still available
before his ban starts on Monday.

Keyworth will be looking to build on their excellent team
performance and victory against Bilborough Pelican last week. Dave
Fisk has a difficult decision to make on team selection with Daniel
Collinson coming off the bench and scoring a brace. Micky Shaw is
still an injury doubt with a foot injury which kept him out of the
game on Saturday. Ravenscroft returns to the squad after work
commitments.

Collinson, Collison, Cooke, Frame, Nicholls, Ravenscroft, Royston,

Notts FA Intermediate Section Cup Semi Finals
Attenborough 14:30 Retford Town
This week Boro face Retford Town in the Notts Intermediate Cup semi
final at The Strand, ko 2.30. Boro will have to turn in a lot better
performance than the one against Magdala to stand any chance in this
match. Although the Boro cause wasn’t helped by the sending off of
Kev Bagshaw after 15 minutes for a ‘professional foul’ given by
linesman John Cottee, a very debatable decision and one which
disrupted Boro’s formation drastically. The Boro tackling and all
round first half display was sadly lacking and they went in 1-0 down
at the break. Immediately after the break Constable missed a good
chance and almost straight away Magdala added to their tally. Boro
then decided to wake up and Steve Oldham was brought down in the box
and converted the penalty to give Boro a chance, with 10 men it was
a difficult task and Magdala ran out 2-1 winners. Thanks to Magdala
for switching the fixture which enabled Boro to pull a ‘home’
game in and for their hospitality after the game.
Retford are in second spot in the Doncaster Senior League with five
games in hand on the leaders in a league which has several old
Central Midlands teams in such as Rossington Main so a tough game is
in prospect.
Hemmingsley picks from: Woolley, Murphy, Shepherd, Oldham A, Bagshaw,
Richardson, Spencer, Richards, Scott, South, Constable, Oldham S,
Antcliff, Flinders, Catwell, Webster T and Webster D.
